Suspension of Bibit’s case depends on investigators: Police

The National Police has hinted at continuing a criminal investigation into suspended Corruption Eradication Commission deputy chief Bibit Samad Rianto despite a call from the President for an out-of-court settlement.

Spokesman for the National Police Insp. Gen. Nanan Sukarna said suspension of the case implicating Bibit would be up to the investigators to decide.

“Police investigators are still completing the dossier of Bibit. It will depend on them whether to halt the case or submit the dossier to the state prosecutors,” Nanan told Antara, adding that investigators worked independently and could not be intervened by other parties, including the police chief, for the sake of the supremacy of law.

Yudhoyono said in his speech on Monday night he would like to see the KPK debacle settled outside the court, but he would let the police and Attorney General’s Office decide.

The Attorney General’s Office has hinted at halting the investigation into suspended KPK deputy chief Chandra M. Hamzah.

Nanan said the case implicating Chandra and Bibit should be settled in accordance with the due process of law for the sake of legal certainty.

“We respect the President’s statement and recommendations from the presidential fact-finding team. For the National Police the President had taken a wise stance [in not meddling with a legal process],” Nanan said.
