Human rights watchdog Imparsial says that both the National Police and the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) must drop the case against two suspended Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) deputy chairmen, Chandra M. Hamzah and Bibit Samad Riyanto, within a week.

“The AGO must stop hiding behind technical reasons by saying that it takes two weeks to complete the needed dossier on Chandra and Bibit before dropping the case,” Imparsial Executive Director Rachland Nashidik told a conference at his office in Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday.

“President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s instructions to them are clear. The president wants the case to be dropped.. If the case against Chandra and Bibit is not dropped, then Imparsial will lead a massive wave of protest,” he added.

Chandra and Bibit were charged with bribery. However, a fact finding team established by the president found that the evidence was not enough to charge them and therefore, recommended the case be dropped.

The president then said in his statement that the case had to be dropped if the police and the AGO failed to find any solid proof.

The case had to be dropped before Dec. 21, the date that will mark a three-month inactive period for Chandra and Bibit.

According to the KPK Law, if one of the anti-graft leaders fails to do his or her job in three consecutive months, then he or she must be permanently dismissed.
