Pramono Anung, legislator from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) and also one of the House of Representatives deputy speakers, says that the Bank Century inquiry committee must be led by legislators from his party.

“As the party that initiated the petition for the committee, it will be very appropriate if the leadership posts of the committee are given to the PDI-P, or other parties that has joined the petition from the start, for instance, the People’s Conscience Party (Hanura),” he told reporters at the House in Senayan, South Jakarta, on Wednesday.

Pramono also said that he truly appreciate the decision of the Democratic Party to finally join in the parade to support the endorsement of the committee.

“I also feel no worry at all over the possibility for the Democratic Party to weaken the committee,” he said.

“The committee will be closely monitored by the public. So, let’s not mess with it,” he added.

Separately, the House speaker, Marzuki Alie from the Democratic Party, said that he believed the committee would be able to resolve the Bank Century debacle, which is said to have cost the country some Rp 6.7 trillion (US$710 million) of taxpayers’ money.

“The committee will be able to summon the Financial Transaction Report Analysis Center (PPATK) to reveal its report on where did the money go,” he said.

The House plans to endorse the committee in a plenary session on Dec. 1.
