Quakes rock Papua, Aceh

Mild earthquakes jolted the country’s easternmost province of Papua and westernmost province of Aceh on Thursday, but no injuries or damages were reported.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said a quake with a magnitude of 5.3 struck at 6:33 p.m. Jakarta time in the Papuan regency of Nabire. It was centered in Papuan waters at about 90 kilometers northeast of Nabire.

Earlier in the day, a magnitude-5 temblor hit the Aceh regency of Sigli at about 12:27 Jakarta time. The epicenter of the quake was located at 55 kilometers southeast of Sigli at 10 kilometers beneath the sea floor.

The Sigli quake was also felt in the provincial capital of Banda Aceh.
