Traveling Through

I firmly believe that travel is one of the best things for us as people. It takes us out of the daily routine, letting us see new places and new faces that are a refreshing change from boredom and frustrations.

The sad thing is most of us don’t do enough of it, either because we don’t have the time or don’t make the time. Still, in our group of cover stories this month, we find that a new generation of Indonesians is catching the travel bug, and many of them are women who are relishing the opportunity to explore the world, either alone or in groups.

Foreign destinations are still the choice for many, not so much because of the pride factor of going abroad, but because it often ends up being cheaper and more convenient. We still need to do a lot more to put Indonesia’s exceptional attractions on the map, including to fellow Indonesians.

After 19 years in Indonesia, first as a high school exchange student in Padang, university exchange student in Malang, and now living and working in Jakarta, I feel privileged to be living here, to know the country, culture and language, and to learn something new every day. I also know that I need to use this great opportunity to explore the archipelago, because the journey is too good to miss.
