The meat distribution committee at the Istiqlal Grand Mosque in Jakarta said Saturday that they were considering to stop handing out meat directly, as the current system did not work well.
News portal kompas.com has reported that thousands have waited outside the mosque since Friday night for the distribution of meat from animals slaughtered during the annual Islamic sacrifice day of Idul Adha.
A number of people who registered for meat package and hundreds of others with no registration were left with no share.
Syamsuddin, chairman of the committee, said that they were considering to gradually reducing the number of meat packages distributed directly to the people, before stopping the handing out and distributed the meat instead to local organizations, who would later hand out the meat to people living in poverty.
“We have been handing out directly for years. If we suddenly stop it, the people would get mad,” he said.
The committee, he said, has moved the meat distribution to the morning after they slaughter the animals since three years ago, so people would not have to wait under the heat of the day.
The mosque board is handing out 7,000 meat packages after slaughtering 20 cows and 232 goats on Friday.

The poor are exploited by the rich 365 days a year, and the rich are then allowed to gain forgiveness for screwing the poor by giving a pittance back for religious reasons on just a few days. When are the poorer people in this country going to be allowed some dignity? I find it incredibly sad that their is a need to hand out meat to so many people in the land of the largest economy in Asia. I find the ritual, and that is all that it is, cynical and sickening, it has completely lost all of its true meaning.
