JAKARTA: The government has moved forward the national final exam for senior high school students by one month to the third week of March 2010 to allow those who fail to take remedial test.

Head of East Java education agency Soewanto said the new schedule would also give students who do not pass the final exam a chance to sit university admission test, provided that they perform well in the remedial test, which will be held in the third or fourth week of May 2010.

University entrance test used to take place in July.

"Students now stand a bigger chance to pass the national exam, albeit after two attempts," Soewanto said.

The government has said school and teachers, rather than the national exam, will decide students' passage of education.

The policy came after the Supreme Court ruled in favor of a citizen lawsuit against the government-administered national exam. - JP
