JEMBER: Two babies who have a parent with HIV/AIDS have been successfully delivered in Jember, but their health status remains unclear.

"We are intensively monitoring their condition," counsellor coordinator at the VCT clinic of the Jember RSUD Dr. Soebandi Hospital, Justina Evi Tyaswati, said Sunday.

She added that she had to wait until the babies were 18 months old before she could conduct a VCT test to determine their HIV/AIDS status. Justina, however, expressed confidence that one of the babies had not contracted the lethal disease, especially because the VCT tests held on its mother had also been negative.

"The baby's father has been a patient at the VCT clinic since 2007, but his wife, who has been routinely having VCT tests every three months, is not infected so far," she said. - JP
