SURABAYA: Some 100 workers staged a rally in front the East Java Employment Agency Office on Wednesday, demanding the agency revise the 2010 minimum wage and solve some tripartite problems, which have yet to be resolved.

Comprising of workers from a number of companies, the protesters were blocked from entering the office by dozens of police personnel. However, 10 protestors were later permitted to enter the building to meet officials.

Jamaludin, the coordinator of the Alliance of Protesting Workers (ABM), said the 2010 minimum wage was not fair for workers, arguing that it did not represent a fair cost of living.

"We hope the administration will soon revise the 2010 minimum wage figure so that laborers can live better and meet their basic needs," Jamaludin said.

So far the minimum wage set for Pacitan regency is the lowest among the figures set for the regencies and cities in the province. - JP
