As the US and European markets have struggled through the global financial crisis, businessmen in Hong Kong now expect to shift their focus onto mainland China and other developing Asian markets, including Indonesia.

Speaking at the 10th Hong Kong Forum on Tuesday, Jack So, chairman of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), said real growth today was being driven by a developing Asia, and especially China.

He said the Chinese mainland’s 200 million middle-class consumers were generating demand for consumer goods and creating new opportunities for manufacturers worldwide.

“The council will be making a big push into the mainland’s domestic market, focusing on the services sector and on Hong Kong-branded products. It will also expand promotional efforts in new and emerging markets, including India and ASEAN countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand,” he said during the forum, which took place at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center.

The two-day Hong Kong Forum is the annual event of the Federation of Hong Kong Business Associations Worldwide.

More than 380 business leaders from 24 countries are taking part in the 10th Hong Kong Forum. The event will be followed by the World Small Medium Enterprises and Innovative Design Tech Expo. The two events will be held at the same place, from Thursday to Saturday.
