The General Elections Commission (KPU) denied reports Wednesday that it had received money from Bank Century bailout funds and will file a libel lawsuit against the NGO that spread the allegations.

The People’s Democracy Fortress (Bendera) antigraft NGO has listed a number of people and institutions as illegal recipients of Bank Century bailout funds.

KPU member Syamsulbahri said all activities of the polls body were covered by the state budget.

“The KPU chief has told us the accusations are groundless. We are consulting our lawyers on possible legal moves against the NGO,” Syamsulbahri told a media conference.

KPU chief Hafiz Anshary and six other commissioners held an unscheduled meeting on the sidelines of a gathering with regional election commissions from across the country in Batam on Tuesday to discuss the allegations, Syamsulbahri said.

“The legislative and presidential elections were funded by the state budget, therefore the NGO’s accusation is considered slander,” Syamsulbahri said.

He added, however, the KPU would conduct an internal investigation to find out if individual commisssioners or officials received money from Bank Century.

On Tuesday the former campaign team for presidential candidate Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono filed a report with the police against Bendera.
