Golkar Party legislator Idrus Marham won the top job of the House of Representatives’ special committee of inquiry into the Bank Century scandal through a vote Friday.
Idrus, a close confidant of Golkar chairman Aburizal Bakrie, grabbed 19 votes, which were more than enough to take the post of the 30-strong committee. His closest rival, Gayus Lumbuun of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), finished a distant second with seven votes.
Gayus and the other losing candidates, Mahfudz Shidiq of the Prosperous Justice Party and Yahya Sacawiriya of President Susilo bambang Yudhoyono’s Democratic Party, will serve as Idrus’ deputies.
Idrus’ nomination had sparked criticism as he was not one of the original sponsors of the motion to mount an inquiry to unveil alleged irregularities in the issuing of Rp 6.7 trillion in bailout funds to the bank.
His appointment is seen as a compromise, as both the PDI-P and Democratic Party had insisted on taking the leadership post.
