Police: Nightclub fire kills 20

North Sumatra police have confirmed that 20 people, including nine women, were killed as fire razed popular nightclub M City in the provincial capital of Medan on Friday night.

The police chief, Insp. Gen. Badrodin Haiti, said a number of people had been questioned in connection with the fatal blaze.  

All the bodies were taken to Pirngadi State Hospital for identification. Local media reported that two of the casualties were adjutants to Governor Syamsul Arifin.

The police suspected that the fire started from the third floor of the building, which was mostly made up of karaoke lounges.
 
The building used to be a shopping center, but was changed into an entertainment center last year.
