A special House of Representatives committee of inquiry is scheduled to question Vice President Boediono and Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati regarding the controversial Rp 6.76 trillion (US$ 710 million) bailout of Bank Century.
Boediono and Sri Mulyani are expected to clarify their roles as former Bank Indonesia (BI) governor and Finance Minister respectively, in the decision to issue the bailout. Critics claim both were responsible for the government's decision to inject the funds info the ailing bank.
Bambang Soesatyo, a legislator from the Golkar Party, said the committee was compiling a list of people it deemed witnesses or experts in the case.
“We will publicly announce [the names] so people trust that this inquiry is being conducted in a transparent manner,” Bambang was quoted as saying by Antara state news agency.
The House had agreed to appoint Golkar legislator Idrus Marham to lead the committee, which is tasked with unveiling the controversial bailout fund. Speculation from certain quarters have arisen that people linked to the Democratic Party have misused the bailout fund to finance this year's election. (ewd)
