Security personnel on Monday shot to death an Israeli man trying to enter the Gaza Strip, the military said.
It said Israeli soldiers and civilian security guards employed by the Defense Ministry spotted the man running toward a border crossing and clambering onto the fence that separates Israel from Gaza.
The security personnel ordered the man to stop, then shot him after he ignored their orders and warning shots, the military said. It described the man as mentally disturbed.
Tensions along the Gaza-Israel border are high. Israel has blockaded Gaza since Hamas militants seized power there in June 2007. Palestinians who have approached the border fence from the Gaza side have been shot by Israeli security forces and in some cases killed.
