Text your say: Graft fighting prospect

A- A A+

Your comments on the prospect of corruption eradication efforts, following the dropping of an alleged false power-abuse case against two deputy leaders of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Bibit Samad Rianto and Chandra M. Hamzah.

The fabricated case of the KPK leaders is over now. The crocodile (the police) has lost in his fight against the gecko (the KPK). I hope that Bibit and Chandra will continue their struggle to eradicate corruption in our beloved country.

By the way, the prosecutors do not drop the case, because the case is non-existent.

I believe that the Bibit-Chandra case should have been processed by formal legal institutions based on the law and the constitution like the police, the Attorney General's Office, and should have been decided by the courts without any intervention, including from the President himself.

Everything should have been allowed proceed in accordance with the legal process. Should the prosecutors drop the case based on the presidential advice, it bypasses the correct procedures, and this could be applied equally to all citizens who have experienced cases such as Bibit and Chandra.

Prosecutors dropped the Chandra-Bibit case after President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono advised the judiciary institutions to do so, fulfilling the recommendation issued by the fact-finding team, which found no evidence in the case.

It is a good thing to maintain a good relationship between the KPK, the Attorney General's Office and the police. But how, if the case deserves to be prosecuted? Is the dropping of the case a good precedent for fighting corruption? It is a bad precedence in law enforcement in this country.

It is an indication that law enforcement can be politicized. I believe the prosecutors have to go ahead to charge Bibit and Chandra to make sure that law enforcement is not negotiable and based on consensus.

The situation is worse because we witness in other cases many wealthy people can evade justice because they can pay law enforcers. If our government wants to uphold the law, we have to stop playing with the law. Enforce the law in accordance with the standard procedure so that we can maintain justice for all.

Indonesia's future prospect for graft fighting depends on the ability of Indonesian people to elect their leaders.
