The National Police say five officers accused of assaulting a University of Indonesia researcher and will be axed and subjected to a criminal investigation.
“These officers will be fired,” police internal affairs chief Insp. Gen. Oegroseno said Tuesday.
“However, they won’t just face disciplinary measures, as we will also start a criminal probe and have already prepared dossiers [to be submitted to prosecutors].”
The force will also punish the five officers’ immediate superiors, including the Beji Police chief and Depok Police chief, he said.
“This incident and prior cases obviously show the quality of their leadership,” Oegroseno said.
“Therefore we are going to evaluate them immediately.”
He added these local police chiefs would most likely face disciplinary punishment for failure to provide clear guidance to their subordinates.
Disciplinary punishment usually ranges from removal from a current post to a delay in scheduled promotion.
J.J. Rizal, a historian and researcher at the University of Indonesia campus in Depok, and also the director of the Komunitas Bambu cultural organization, told reporters at the Jakarta Police headquarters that five officers had assaulted him and threatened him with guns on Saturday.
