Referring to corruption as a common enemy, on Tuesday President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono reasserted his pledge to lead a jihad (holy war) against corruption in Indonesia.

In a televised speech on the eve of International Anti-Corruption Day, Yudhoyono asked the public to work together to fight graft, saying he wished to create a clean government as his legacy by the end of his term in 2014.

Claiming to have done a lot to eradicate corruption since he assumed power in 2004, Yudhoyono said reforms within the Attorney General’s Office and the National Police would be the top priority of his administration in the coming five years.

He said he would soon form a task force that would work for two years to eradicate corruption at law enforcement agencies, which he said had plagued anticorruption efforts in Indonesia.

The task force, he said, would target corrupt officials and the backroom wheeling and dealing.

“Law enforcement agencies must be sterile from corruption,” Yudhoyono said, adding that the task force would fall under his direct supervision.

Yudhoyono also reaffirmed his support for a thorough investigation of the Bank Century scandal, which has seen pressure mount for Vice President Boediono and Finance Minister Sri Mulyani to resign.
