State prosecutors from the Sleman District Court are seeking six years jail term for suspended Sleman Regent Ibnu Subiyanto for his alleged role in a corruption scandal worth Rp 12 billion (US$1.26 million).
During a court session Wednesday, the prosecutors also demanded the defendant pay Rp 500 million in fines or serve an additional six months in prison if he failed to pay it to the state coffers.
The prosecutors said the defendant had violated a 2003 presidential regulation for appointing PT Balai Pustaka to provide thousands of textbooks for elementary, junior and senior high schools in 2004.
The defendant is also suspected to have misused his power, ordering the Sleman administration to finance a book procurement project.
This authority, the prosecutors said, should have been undertaken by the regency education agency.
The court will hear Ibnu's defense Dec. 23.
