Government insists on regulating interception

Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Djoko Suyanto said the government would go ahead with its plan to regulate lawful interception to help law enforcers act against offenders.

“The regulation is necessary and not intended to weaken the Corruption Eradication Commission [the KPK]. Instead the regulation will empower the KPK in combating graft,” Djoko told Antara after a seminar on the Indonesian political outlook on Thursday.

Djoko added the wiretapping mechanism was being discussed at the Ministry of Communication and Information.

“Later on, all the stakeholders, including the KPK, will be asked for input in connection with the interception mechanism,” Djoko said.

He dismissed fears about possible leaks as a result of the lengthy procedure to authorize a wiretap. “That’s what the regulation is for. It will prevent leakage,” Djoko said.

Interim KPK chief Tumpak Hatorangan Panggabean has opposed the regulation, which he said is prone to leakage and will slow KPK moves.
