BOGOR: Land subsidence in Curugbitung in Nanggung district, Bogor regency, has displaced 321 people from 85 families.
The subsidence has caused moderate damage to dozens of homes and severe damage to seven.
Local resident Minah said the disaster struck on Nov. 25 with torrential rains from dusk until dawn.
Afterward, she said, the land began sinking and the walls of several houses cracked. Seven have since almost split in two.
“We moved in with relatives before eventually evacuating the village,” Minah said Thursday as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
She added makeshift dwellings were only erected Wednesday, while relief aid came the same day.
District head Ujang Supendi denied his office had been slow in responding to the problem.
“A day after the event, we, along with the police and the military, came to the location and asked residents to stay calm,” he told said as quoted by tempointeraktif.com. — JP
