Letter: Speech problem

I enjoyed your article "Dreamers come of age" (the Post, Dec. 6) about the new film Sang Pemimpi.
The article mentioned the character Jimbron, who began to stutter as a youth and has continued to have this speech problem throughout this life.
I just want to comment that stuttering affects 1 percent of the total adult population, as well as about 4 percent of children at some point during their developmental years; 75 percent of these children stop stuttering entirely. All experts agree that early intervention with speech therapy is a must.
I would like to tell your readers about a nonprofit organization here in North America called The Stuttering Foundation (www.stutteringhelp.org), which has a website that offers many free resources such as streaming videos and downloadable brochures.
This organization makes books and DVDs that are used around the world in many languages. I hope that your readers will know that stuttering can be overcome through speech therapy for as lifetime of fluency.
