A statue of U.S. President Barrack Obama as a child, recently unveiled in Menteng Park, Jakarta, has sparked controversy over its significance.
Amarullah A, a local leader, said Menteng Park, which was the former soccer field of the Jakarta soccer club, should have a statue that reflects local history.
“The Obama statue should have been placed at his elementary school in Menteng instead of in Menteng Park,” he said as quoted by TVOne
Ahmad Mubarok, the Democratic Party deputy chairman, praised the statue, saying it was a good idea and a fine sculpture produced by a local artist, thus it should be respected.
A group of residents also created an account in Facebook to reject the new statue.
