JAKARTA: The Jakarta Police's narcotics unit announced Wednesday it had arrested a suspect in possession of more than 4,000 Ecstasy pills and who was believed to be running a drugs factory in Cengkareng, West Jakarta.

Unit chief Sr. Comr. Anjan Pramuka Putra said the 60-year-old suspect was arrested last week in the parking lot of the Seasons City mall in West Jakarta.

Police seized 4,450 Ecstasy pills from him, with estimated street value of Rp 160 million (US$17,000).

Police then raided his rented house in the Taman Palem Lestari residential complex in Cengkareng and found lab equipment believed to be used to make the drugs.

They also discovered 150,000 diazepam pills and 388,000 ephedrine pills at the scene.

Ephedrine is an ingredient in the manufacture of Ecstasy and crystal methamphetamine.

"We believe the suspect distributed the homemade Ecstasy in Jakarta and other big cities in the country," Anjan said.

Police are now on the trail of a Malaysian national believed to have supplied the ingredients. -JP
