JAKARTA: Acting requires skills, and guts. Comedian Aming Supriatna Sugandhi understands this, that’s why he has braced himself for some challenging roles, such as taking on the role of a gay man.
Aming, who is currently shooting Bukan Malin Kundang (Not Malin Kundang), said he didn’t mind doing scenes that might be deemed controversial in Indonesia, including kissing his male acting partner.
“As long as that kind of scene is needed to develop the story, why not?” he said during the movie’s press conference recently. “I am not doing it for the sake of popularity,” he added.
In the movie, Aming plays ex-MTV video jockey Alex Abbad’s gay partner. Although he acknowledges that some of the scenes might be perceived as daring, he admits he doesn’t let it bother him.
“After all, I have already played many characters deemed ‘unusual’ such as transvestites and gigolos,” said Aming, who also impersonated an old lady in his previous movie.
So, having played so many unusual characters, is he ready to tackle more challenges?
“Sure. I’m looking forward to play a killer and a psychopath,” he smiled.
