Text your say: Bank Century bailout

A- A A+

Your comments on the ongoing parliamentary inquiry, which is likely to target Vice President Boediono and Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indarwati for their decision to bail - out Century Bank.

Boediono and Sri Mulyani are the two most credible people of SBY's Cabinet. They're technocrats who were recruited for their capability and not their political links. I believe they have too much integrity and reputation at stake to bow to political pressure. Their involvement in the case and its impact on our fragile economy would be unthinkable.

As for the parliamentary inquiry, let's hope the shortlisted lawmakers will use their conscience to reveal the honest truth, without any political agenda.

Judging from the baseless accusations from a lawmaker against Sri Mulyani, it seems that we are in for a tough ride.

But let's believe that, at the end of the day, the good guys will prevail (and the bad ones will not escape).

The inquiry team should focus on how to get the lost money back and to investigate where the money actually went, rather than attempting to replace good ministers who tried to prevent an economic disaster.

House members should prepare themselves before they take part in contests. Do not go to war with a wooden sword. You will end up in disgrace.

The media is taking every opportunity to tarnish the image of anyone who is noncompliant with the law. When all cities and towns display billboards asking people to pay their taxes, it is not new for the finance ministry to check on House members. It is its population they are concerned about, not selected people.

It is easy; just look back on your tax payments, if you paid, then why should you be afraid? If you have not paid, then excuse yourself and you will come out without embarrassment. If you are embarrassed, your families will be hurt and you will become the topic of gossip.

Both Boediono and Sri Mulyani are well-known for their intelligence and integrity. So the decision they've made to bailout Bank Century must be a sound one in order to prevent further collapse of the whole banking system in the country.

This is what is required at this moment: legal action for misleading information. If everyone is allowed to talk, they just say something which is not factual - irresponsible people, coming out on a Sunday morning, shouting holding banners, showing their faces to the TV cameras and disappearing. We cannot continue like this.

If people are so concerned about the country, try and gather people who want to go to one of the 17,000 islands and cultivate it to support the economy of Indonesia. That is caring for the country.

The positive point of legal action is the opportunity it creates for the many lawyers looking for clients, and it will also create jobs for clerks and others down the line. What we need then is many new prisons. Because, if one loses his case and does not have the money to pay the fines, he must be sent to prison.

Another opportunity is to develop the many islands into prisons, so at least we can send the convicts to these islands to grow the basic commodities, such as sugar cane, so we can reduce our sugar imports.

So, taking legal action against people who are nonfactual, could be a new type of business for our country. Whoever they may be, they must tailor their words and be responsible for what they are saying.
