A House of Representatives lawmaker from President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s Democratic Party will soon serve four years of jail term after the Supreme Court convicted him of graft recently.

Muarojambi prosecutor’s office in Jambi has sent officers to Jakarta to pick As’ad Syam up after he defied the office’s summons three times.

“We have given him a chance to respond to our summons, but he never turned up. Therefore we will forcibly ask him to serve his jail sentence in accordance with the procedure,” Muarojambi prosecutor’s office chief Rusman Widodo told Antara on Sunday.

Upholding a lower court’s verdict, the Supreme Court found As’ad guilty of misusing Rp 4 billion in state funds in the construction of a diesel fuel-fired power plant in Sungai Bahar, Jambi.

Rusman said his office had earlier sent a courier to submit the third summons to As’ad letter notifying him of the Supreme Court’s verdict, but to no avail as the lawmaker was visiting a number of regions across the country. He is scheduled to arrive in Jakarta on Jan. 3.

Assistant to the provincial prosecutor’s office chief, Andi Herman, said no one could resist a legally binding verdict from the Supreme Court.
