jongArsitek! exposes hidden talents

A- A A+

Young, ambitious, and ready to conquer the world with plenty of fresh designs are qualities shared by architects who set up jongArsitek!.

One of the founders, Paskalis Khrisno Ayodyantoro, said many students and young architects were sometimes trapped in a certain stream that made it hard for them to reveal their potential.

"Some offices and schools have their own teachings or methods about design. But through jongArsitek! they can let anything out and present their ideas to people," he said.

Developed two years ago, jongArsitek! is a place for young emerging Indonesian architects to share anything about design. Members include those just starting their careers in architecture, as well as architecture students and those interested in design.

jongArsitek! has not only become a place for enthusiasts to share ideas, but also provides them with a forum to put these ideas - that couldn't be shared at their office or school - into writing or pictures to be shared with others.in its digital free-publication.

"It's like a free-magazine but is presented in PDF format and published on our website. It features stories and pictures from our contributors," Paskalis says.

"It's a sort of architecture journal that is fun and not too formal and rigid," he said.

The 40-page magazine (part written in Indonesian and part English), is also published in a printed version.

jongArsitek! also works with the Indonesian Young Architects (AMI) association and the Association of Indonesian Architects (IAI), frequently organizing and participating in architecture workshops and exhibitions in several cities, Paskalis said.

jongArsitek! is currently taking part in the annual Bandung Architecture Family Festival (Baffest). Previously, together with AMI, jongArsitek! held an exhibition at the Salihara Community gallery, in South Jakarta.

Paskalis said that although the organization did not have a formal office, its members often used its website or social networking sites to schedule meetings and meeting places.

"We just meet in coffee shops or cafes when we feel like meeting up, or when we are going to make an event," he said.
