The South Tangerang branch of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) banned Sunday the erection of a statue of Banten Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin at a Pamulang traffic circle.
The local MUI chapter cited fears people would worship the statue.
Saidi, the local MUI chairman, said the statue violated Islamic teachings of the Prophet Muhammad.
"The money to build the statue will be better allocated for other public purposes," he was quoted as saying by Antara news agency.
