JAKARTA: Governor Fauzi Bowo gave an acerbic retort Monday when asked about the recently unveiled statue of Barack Obama in Menteng Park, Central Jakarta.

"Ask the Central Jakarta mayor," he blurted out at City Hall, as quoted by detik.com.

The statue depicts the US president as a smiling 10-year-old boy with a butterfly on his outstretched hand, and was commissioned by the Indonesia-based Friends of Obama Foundation.

Despite the highfalutin reason given for its construction, namely to encourage children to live up to their dreams, many have opposed the gesture, and a Facebook group demanding the statue be taken down had recorded more than 39,000 members by Monday. -JP
