Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) renewed its calls for withdrawal of a draft government regulation on interception, saying it may grant state officials immunity.

ICW deputy coordinator Emerson Yuntho told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday at least seven positions would be exempted from interception.

“They are the President and ministers, including the communication and information minister, the attorney general, the head of the Jakarta District Court, members of the National Interception Central Board and the National Interception Supervisory Board, and the National Police chief,” he said.

“The immunity may extend to their families and colleagues.”

Emerson said these officials played a key role in the forming the draft regulation.

“So, it will be difficult for the Corruption Eradication Commission [KPK] to wiretap any of them. The wiretapping request may be rejected or leaked,” he said.
