The National Police said Tuesday they would launch a security operation to safeguard this year’s Christmas and New Year celebrations.

Operation Candle will run from Dec. 24 to Jan. 5 and will involve 79,154 police officers throughout the country.

“The National Police reserve force will contribute 560 personnel,” National Police deputy spokesman Brig. Gen. Sulistyo Ishak told a press conference.

"Reinforcements are ready to assist in volatile regions."

He said police would tighten security at several key locations such as churches, shopping malls, and housing complexes.

"We will collaborate with church officials to secure all churches where Christmas celebrations will be held to avoid any danger to those celebrating the holy day,” he said.

Sulistyo also urged people attending Christmas mass to not draw attention to themselves by carrying a lot of bags.
