A top state security official and the wife of a governor abducted by suspected leftist rebels say his body has been found. His kidnapping was the first of a major Colombian politician in years.

The body of Gov. Luis Francisco Cuellar of Caqueta state has been found less than 24 hours after his kidnapping.

Security official Edilberto Ramon Endo tells The Associated Press that it was found not far from the state capital where the 69-year-old governor was kidnapped Monday night. Police say was a commando unit of between eight and 10 leftist rebels carried out the abduction.

Cuellar's wife, Himeldo Galindo, also confirmed the death to the AP. She was too distraught to offer details and Endo refused to say more.
