Forensic team investigates collapsed building in Jakarta

A forensic team from the Jakarta Police is investigating the collapse of a Central Jakarta commercial center, which killed two Wednesday.

Kompas.com has reported that six officers quickly rushed out to the ruins of the building which has been sealed.

Besides the forensic team, the National Search and Rescue Team and fire department are working together to evacuate people still feared trapped in part of the center.

At least nine people were injured and brought to nearby hospitals for further medical treatment.

The Central Jakarta Police have questioned five witnesses at the scene.

Head of the police Snr. Comr. Hamidin said the police would charge the owner of the building with article 359 of the Criminal Code should they find any negligence in the construction of the part of the building.

“The owner may face up to five years in jail if proven [guilty],” Hamidin said as quoted by Antara state news agency.

A part of the third story of Metro Tanah Abang commercial center collapsed at around 10.20 a.m.

The collapsed structure was part of an extension being constructed to provide more toilets in the building. (ewd)
