JAKARTA: To celebrate Women’s Day, lawmakers from the Democratic Party visited Marzoeki Mahdi Hospital in Bogor on Tuesday to see Agian Isna Nauli, a female patient who has been hospitalized for four years.

Agian suffered from a stroke and fell into a six-month coma in 2004 after giving birth through a C-section. In 2004, Agian’s husband Satria Hasan Kesuma said that his wife’s condition was a result of malpractice and requested euthanasia for his wife.

The head of the team of doctors looking after Agian, Zainal Abidin, said that in the last two years Agian’s husband had stopped visiting.

“We have lost contact with her husband and family, but all of her treatment and fees are handled by the state,” he said.

The total cost of her treatment has reached Rp 1 billion.

“What Agian is experiencing is a mother’s sacrifice. She went through this after giving birth to her child, and we respect her sacrifice,” said lawmaker Nova Riyanti Yusuf.
