Rescue workers search for victims in Jakarta building collapse

Rescue workers continue to dig through rubble after an part of a commercial center that was under construction collapsed in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta on Wednesday. Police reported that at least five people have been evacuated.

News portal kompas.com reported that a part of the third story of Metro Tanah Abang commercial center collapsed at around 10:20 a.m. Five people have been evacuated to nearby Tarakan Hospital.

The collapsed structure was part of an extension to provide more toilets in the building. Local fire agency has deployed at least four ambulances and eight fire trucks.

Authorities have cordoned off the disaster area, warning of possible further collapse, while people have began flocking to watch the rescue work.

Police have closed the road on which the center is located and redirected the traffic in Tanah Abang.
