KLUNGKUNG: Twenty-seven artists from six countries will participate in the cultural event “Apa Ini, Apa Itu” (What’s This, What’s That) that kicks off Tuesday.

The three-day gathering will take place at Lepang Beach and the Suklu Art Studio in Klungkung, 30 kilometers east of Denpasar.

“We’re wrapping up preparations for the event,” organizing committee head Sujana Suklu said Saturday.

Massive installation works will be the visual focus of the cultural gathering, with Suklu building the bamboo installation “Menunggu Angin” (Waiting for the wind), while Tisna Sanjaya will move his tomb installation from Sanur Beach in Denpasar to Lepang, and Ubud-based painter  Made Djirna using an excavator as a backdrop for his performance.

“The participating foreign artists have sent drawings of their installations, and those works are currently being constructed by the local community,” Suklu said.

Artist Welldo Wnophringgo will lock himself for 53 hours inside a specially built house to create his own artworks.

“The gathering is aimed at closing the understanding gap separating contemporary arts from the general public,” said event founder Daniel Kho.

Reproductions of the works of famous painters, including Chagall, Picasso and Warhol, will also be exhibited at the gathering.

Participating foreign artists include Charlie Crooijmans (the Netherlands), Danuta Franzen (Poland), Mireka Jasmiene Okubo (Japan) and Shoosie Saulaiman (Malaysia).

Participating local artists include Kho, Agung Gunawan, Cedil, Daniel Zacharias, Deasylinada da Ary,
Nyoman Sujana Kenyem and Nyoman Sura.
