City awards SEAG athletes from Jakarta

JAKARTA: Governor Fauzi Bowo presented awards to 64 athletes from Jakarta who participated in the recent Southeast Asian Games in Vientiane, Laos.

Of the 64 athletes, 10 clinched gold medals, 12 won silver and 19 secured bronze.

Head of the Jakarta branch of the National Sports Council (KONI), Winny Erwindia, said the awards for the athletes would be taken from the 2009 city budget.

"Individual gold medalists will receive Rp. 70 million, silver medalists will receive Rp 25 million, while bronze medalists will receive 12.5 million," she said.

She further announced the award for athletes in pairs and groups as well as coaches.

She said athletes who did not win any medals would still receive Rp. 2.5 million.

The city spent Rp. 1.85 billion on the awards.

Indonesia finished third after Thailand and Vietnam in the medal tally with 43 gold, 53 silver and 74 bronze medals. - JP
