The National Police finally named Comr. Gen Yusuf Manggabarani as deputy police chief to replace Comr. Gen Makbul Padmanegara, ending speculation over who would take over the post.
Makbul will end his term in office by Thursday, and Yusuf would be sworn in on the same day.
There was some speculation earlier that former chief detective Comr. Gen. Susno Duadji was among the candidates that could fill the post of deputy chief.
But the selection of Yusuf, former police inspectorate chief, over Susno showed the police leadership was not taking any chances that it might receive more criticism from the public after the latter has been accused of playing a role in the Bank Century scandal, and is currently under investigation by the House of Representatives and the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).
The police deputy for human resources Insp. Gen Edy Eunarno told reporters on Wednesday that the selection was made in a meeting of the police advisory council.
“The appointment is based on experience and competency,” he said as quoted by Antara.
Yusuf’s previous post would be filled by Insp. Gen. Nanan Sukarna, former police spokesman.
Edy insisted that Susno, who handed over his chief of detectives post to Insp. Gen Ito Sumardi earlier this month, was not on the list of candidates for deputy chief.
“Susno’s name never appeared on the list of candidates,” he said.
Susno handed over his post after public pressure following his alleged role in possibly fabricating evidence against KPK deputy leaders Bibit Samad Rianto and Chandra M. Hamzah.
The announcement of Susno’s replacement was made just one day after President Susilo
Bambang Yudhoyono ordered “reform” within the police, the Attorney General’s Office and the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).
Many antigraft activists, however, expressed their fear that Susno could be elevated to become national police deputy chief.
Although the deputy police chief does not automatically become the chief of police if the latter resigns, the post is considered the second most senior in the police force.
Edy said that Edward Aritonang would replace Nanan as the police spokesman.
