On New Year's Eve, people around the world said their good byes to 2009 and welcomed in 2010 in a variety of festive events, from dance parties and hard-rocking live bands to dinners with glasses of fine wine and champagne.
In hundreds of spots, huge crowds gathered to join in the countdown and watch the fireworks that are a typical part of the celebration.
As the hands of the clock joined up to signal 12:00 midnight, cheers competed with explosions and stunning fireworks blossomed in the skies to mark the hour and the beginning of the new year.
Another year - and decade - has ticked over, and the new one is upon us, ready or not.
Many people will have taken a few moments to think about how to make the incoming year better than the one they have just left, and will probably make a resolution or two, in the hope that 2010 will herald good times.
