Rokan Hulu goes medieval

JAKARTA: The regency administration in Rokan Hulu, Riau, has sparked controversy after drafting a regional ordinance on "social diseases", which forbids dates in public places after 9 p.m.
The draft, prepared by the administration, police and public order agency, was put together following complaints from Islamic clerics and "community figures" about "promiscuous acts" involving youths in public places at night, particularly outside the regent's office.
"The bylaw, if enacted, is expected to restore the regency's credibility," regency secretary Mewahiddin said Wednesday.
"We have to act because the complaints came from community big shots."
Residents have lambasted the plan as a waste of time and money. - JP
