The National Commission on Human Rights will send a letter Thursday to the Bekasi regent to ask him to retract a decision to close an under-construction church in Tambun Utara subdistrict.
Commissioner Jhonny Nelson Simanjuntak said Thursday the commission had studied the regent’s decision and concluded he had committed an “abusive act against human rights”.
“The church congregation had submitted a request to the Bekasi administration for a building permit [for the would-be church] over a year ago, but never received a response,” Jhonny said.
“No wonder they were confused and started looking for any possible solution, including holding Sunday services on the empty land.”
On Tuesday, members of the Filadelfia Huria Kristen Batak Protestan (HKBP) church reported the Bekasi administration to the commission, hours after the administration sealed off their land without prior notice.
