Indonesia to see solar eclipse today

Indonesians will have the opportunity to see a solar eclipse on Friday afternoon, an expert from the National Aeronautics and Space Agency (Lapan) says.

Thomas Djamaludin, a top official from Lapan, told tempointeraktif.com at the Bosscha star observatory and planetarium in Bandung that people in Jakarta and Bandung would be able to see the eclipse.

“From Jakarta, it will be visible between 2:33 p.m. and 4 p.m.,” he said.

United States' National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) said on their website that the annular eclipse of the sun is visible from within a 300-kilometer-wide track that traverses half of Earth.

The path of the moon's antumbral shadow begins in Africa and passes through Chad, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Kenya, and Somalia.

After leaving Africa, the path crosses the Indian Ocean where the maximum duration of annularity reaches 11 minutes 8 seconds.

The central path then continues into Asia through Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, and China. A partial eclipse is seen within the much broader path of the moon's penumbral shadow, which includes eastern Europe, most of Africa, Asia, and Indonesia.
