Golkar out to win legislative elections

Golkar Party has set a target of securing 40 million votes to win the 2014 legislative elections.

Golkar chairman Aburizal Bakrie told reporters in Medan on Saturday that the party would need to recruit 100 members and woo support from 300 sympathizers in each sub-district across the country to reach the goal.

“If the consolidation works as planned, we will win at least 40 million votes in the 2014 elections,” Aburizal said as quoted by Antara.

Golkar finished a distant second to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s Democratic Party in the 2009 elections.

Aburizal, a former Cabinet minister in the first five-year term of Yudhoyono administration, expressed his guarded optimism that Golkar would win a half of regent and gubernatorial posts at stake in 244 regional elections this year.

The party’s candidates for the regional elections will be selected through a survey. In the past the candidates were determined in conventions.
