Letters: Money, the only thing of importance?

A- A A+

Human nature is often like chalk and cheese with compassion and generosity struggling to claw their way through the greed and ignorance of man. The Lampung health insurance cards for the poor (Jamkesmasda) are just one example of how low the human race can go when there is money to be made or saved.

Those responsible for the illegal allocation, and those guilty of the abhorrent scalping, should be taken to task and paraded around the local area clearly labeled as being the lowest of the low. The rich who are guilty of buying the cards should follow just behind to humiliate them in front of their own communities.

But let’s not just point fingers at Lampung, because not so long ago I was in England, where a woman, who did not qualify for free medical treatment because she had too much money, transferred sufficient funds to family members’ accounts and then made her application to the authorities — and of course she duly qualified.

I’m sure this lady was far from alone in doing such a thing, which only goes to prove that a lot of people are only interested in number one.

The strange thing was when I challenged her on this, she became extremely angry and said everyone would have done the same, and that, I think she truly believed.

The thing is that she may well be right, which means that none of us can really condemn the scalpers of Lampung! At the moment the big battle goes on in trying to establish justice in this country, which will never be achieved unless those guilty are publicly chastised, their wealth confiscated and the key thrown away when the slammer door closes.

At the moment even the proven and convicted guilty apparently receive enormous amounts of privilege according to their wealth, which means that justice is simply a sick joke. We can all understand the need to survive and improve one’s circumstances if possible, but when it means abandoning all principles, morals and beliefs, then those that succumb have really lost their own identity and any decency they may think they have.

In other words, they have sold their soul to the devil. Many would say that this doesn’t matter, and it matters not where the money comes from, and job satisfaction is of no great interest, and achievement is simply of little concern and so on. So at the end of the day, the only thing of importance is money, and if that is the case, then roll on global warming.
