A group of unidentified gunmen opened fire at a convoy of vehicles carrying employees of US-based gold miner PT Freeport Indonesia, and security officers, on Sunday, the first shooting incident after a few months of peace.

At least six people, including a foreign employee and two Mobile Brigade police personnel, were injured from broken glass during the ambush at 6:30 a.m. local time at Mile 60 of the access road to Freeport’s gold mine in the Papua regency of Mimika, tempointeraktif.com reported.

Mimika Police officer Comr. Mada Aksanta said the police were searching the area for the attackers.

“Police in the highland area are hunting down the gunmen,” Aksanta said.
