State Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Andi Malarangeng on Sunday called on the public to develop the culture of cycling, which he said would help Indonesia find potential medal winners at international competitions.

“Cycling is not just exercise to maintain our health, but is also a sport that we need to develop,” Andi said after sending off participants of a fun bike event held to commemorate the anniversary of a private TV channel, at Senayan sports complex.

Andi said Indonesia had performed commendably in international cycling competitions but still had a lot to do to promote the culture of cycling, particularly in urban areas.

“We aim to find synergy between bicycles, as a mode of transport, and the busway,” Andi said, referring to Jakarta’s 6-year-old bus rapid transit system.

Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo said the city authorities had made all necessary preparations to facilitate synergy between the busway and bicycles.

“Only the realization of the program matters,” Fauzi said.

Jakarta administration has provided special lanes along several bus routes for cyclists.
