President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Monday renewed his call for House of Representatives politicians to shield themselves from external influence during their inquiry into the controversial bailout of Bank Century.
It is the second time in less than 24 hours that the President has raised the issue, which many say has put a large coalition under Yudhoyono at risk.
“I welcome the examination and investigation of those who made the policy, to determine whether their intentions were genuine and free from vested interests,” the President said in a speech at the opening of Indonesian Military (TNI) leadership meeting at the TNI Headquarters in Cilangkap, East Jakarta.
But he added that should a government policy be criminialised, no official would dare make decisions in the future. “Only if the policy implementation violates the law can we bring it to court,” he said.
Yudhoyono asked the lawmakers to understand the circumstances surrounding the decision to salvage Bank Century in November 2008.
