Sigid pleads not guilty

A- A A+

Sigid Haryo Wibisono, one of the defendants in the high-profile murder of businessman Nasruddin Zulkarnaen, pleaded not guilty to the charges, saying he had no motive to kill the victim as he read out his defense at the trial on Tuesday.

"Someone who commits a murder must have a strong motive before deciding to do so," Sigid told the South Jakarta District Court.

“How come I wanted to kill the victim if I didn't even know him?”

Sigid read his 13-page legal defense before his defense lawyers start delivering their complete defense as a response to the prosecutors' asking for the death sentence for their client.

Nasruddin, a director of state pharmaceutical company PT Putra Rajawali Banjaran, was killed in March last year in a drive-by shooting near Modernland golf course in Tangerang.

The police and prosecutors believe the murder was masterminded by former antigraft body leader Antasari Azhar, with help from former South Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Williardi Wizard, who recruited the hit men, and Sigid, who provided the financial support.
In a previous hearing, the state prosecutors asked for the death sentence for Sigid, Williardi and Antasari.
