Letters: Bali blackout

A- A A+

With disbelief and indignation I learned (the Post, Jan. 25) that the rotating power outage will resume "indefinitely"! For several months - with the foul excuse of maintenance issues - Bali had felt what it means to be dependent on a monopolist, who does not care about the needs of its customers.

A few weeks after the "maintenance" was accomplished, Bali's power plant Gilimanuk shows "overheating", which tells us that the "experts" of the PLN monopoly were not capable of doing their job they highly get paid for, or - there is something else behind the story, PLN tries to sell the public.

I agree and applaud with Putu Armaya, Bali Consumer Protection Body in many things, but absolutely not in his proposed 10 percent reduction of consumer bills for one month, because it would not be just.

A na*ve miscalculation can figure out how many megawatts cannot be consumed due to the blackouts, then split the equivalent amount of rupiah on Bali consumers. And it is not for one, two or three months - but for indefinite period.

In a healthy economy, managers and directors of a successful company receive excellent salaries and annual bonuses. Managers and directors, who fail to fulfill the companies' target to supply the consumers with constant energy, should be fired and sued for losses caused by their ignorance.

Are we living in a healthy economy?
